A shocking audit conducted by the Ministry of Minority Affairs has revealed the significant scale of this issue, uncovering that over half of the reviewed minority institutions - specifically 830 out of 1,572 - were either fraudulent or inactive, leading to a staggering misuse of INR 144.83 crore that was intended for the education of minority students over the past five years. They use fake websites or unsolicited emails to collect personal data, fees, or bank info for identity theft or financial fraud.

In the 2022-23 scholarship cycle, over 6.7 lakh of the 25.5 lakh applications received were identified as fake. Biometric checks conducted on renewal applicants exposed widespread abuse, confirming that only 30% were legitimate.
